Meet Laina Rauma
As I mentioned in my last blog, I recently had the privilege of connecting with Laina to conduct a short interview and I am ecstatic to be able to share it with all of you. Her responses were as real as it comes, and her drive makes me want to strive for more. Hard work and persistence pays off, and Laina is showing the world just that.
Q: Originally from Canada, you moved to the Los Angeles, California. How does the city you live in influence your creativity?
I don’t know if I can say it was the city. It was definitely my family and who I grew up around. My aunts always went thrifting and brought me and my sister when we were really young and both my grandmothers and mother sew and use to make a lot of their own clothes. My family is filled with artists of every facet. My environment was creative and I figured out very early on (7 years old) that clothing was the strongest way I could express myself.
Q: How would you describe your vision?
Hmmm. This is a very broad question. I literally have no clue where to start! The brand, the company, my message, my heart and my art is completely and absolutely about loving yourself and appreciating and loving women.
Q: You’re fearless with your style, in what ways are you fearless in life?
In every way! haha. I have no filter. I say what I feel. I moved to a different country to make my dreams come true. I’m not afraid of anything. I know what I am here for and I believe I am meant to achieve it and thrive and that is what will happen. Nothing really scares me. What is meant to be will be. Even if I don’t like it at first.
Q: How do you balance creativity and time for yourself?
Creativity is time for myself. That is when I’m most excited. It’s the labour of cutting things I’ve already designed and the other company running logistics that I am now working on balancing with the growth of the company. This year has been dedicated to the grind and I’ve been happy in that. Work/life balance will come eventually but this is all part of it. Huge gain doesn’t come without huge sacrifice.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
The best piece of advice is from my Dad who told me to take a year completely alone and realize I am perfect with nothing. Food, air, water, shelter. That’s all we really need. When you realize you are perfect exactly as you are, you are able to give the gift of you and that is what the world needs. You. That is why you’re here. When you realize you are perfect with nothing, you don’t feel desperate to be somebody’s anything. Which is great because you don’t care to please everyone. You never will anyway, so why worry. It’s a great way to live. ;-)
Q: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to pursue the same career as you?
None! If you are going to pursue this career you already know that whatever I say means nothing. You know you have your own path and you know it takes INSANE drive. If you are looking for advice to go into this career, I’d say it isn’t for you. Those who will, will just do it. It’s the most work you will ever do in your life. You’re not special to anybody and you’re forgotten in a second. If you don’t feel in your heart that this is the only option, don’t do it. You just have to looooove it. You don’t choose it, it chooses you and it drives you. And if you have that, you know that no matter what I say will change your mind. Just do it. Do all you know, with what you have, as much as you can. Over and over and over and over and the next step will show itself when it’s time.
Q: What can we expect next from the Laina Rauma collection?
Early 2016! Country Club! ;-)
